A Girl Can Dream: Working Woman

by - February 19, 2014

Today marks week six in my journey for a job and I'm going to a career fair on campus this afternoon so I thought it was only fitting that I share my A Girl Can Dream: Working Woman post!

In the last six weeks, I have been working to build a list of resources by contacting colleagues, friends [of my parents], and previous employers. I've also spent some time editing and sharing my résumé, setting up my LinkedIn account, and arranging a couple of interviews. The process has not been as painful as I anticipated! As I mentioned in a previous post, I love a mini challenge!

I am frequently asked what my plans are for after graduation and I usually respond with "good question" or "I wish I could answer that"! The only thing I know for certain is that I want to move back to Tulsa!

Even though I'm a little confused about what I want to do when I "grow up", I have had three internship experiences to help guide me. My most recent experience was as a public relations intern for Wedsociety, which is a wedding search engine created by The Brides of Oklahoma Magazine. During my time with Wedsociety, I helped to create a public relations campaign to promote the website. I also spent a large amount of time curating website content. In the marketing department at the BOK Center, I localized and issued press releases as well as conducted research of clientele. I also coordinated the social media material for special events. At The Norman Weekender, I served as an advertising intern and I heightened my writing experience by producing a weekly column. Although my internships differed greatly, I loved each of them. They each provided me with an invaluable experience.

I'll graduate in May with a BA in Journalism with an emphasis in public relations. As you can tell from my internships, PR is broad and so are my interests! In my job search, the keywords I having been using include communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, blogging, media relations, brand promotion, brand management, and event planning.

To be honest, I don't really like the word job. It has a somewhat negative, no-fun connotation. After graduation, I hope to find a "place of employment" that I am passionate about. Although I don't have to be friends with or even liked by my coworkers, I hope to spend 40+ hours a week in a happy, maybe even thrilling environment. My greatest desire is to surround myself by people who will challenge me to be a better professional and better individual.

If you or someone you know could be a resource to me during my journey for a job (yes, I said that no-fun word again), please feel free to contact me via email (kendal.kramer@gmail.com), share my résumé and online portfolio, or connect with me on LinkedIn!
