Jetsetter: Sorrento
May 2019 // Italy
See + Do
Pompeii: everyone recommended that we visit Pompeii. I'm glad we did, but I would not categorize it as a must see. If you go, do the guided tour. Our guide was great. He was knowledgeable and funny. My personal problem with Pompeii is that there is not that much to see. I really wanted to see more old structures, like artwork, floor plans, tile work and items from that time period. Sadly, most of those things were ruined by the ash. The tour and tickets are sold separately. You pay for your tour at the train station in Sorrento then you purchase your ticket to Pompeii at the door. It's best to have euros.
Beach Chairs: if you head to the beach, you'll find plenty of places that have chairs to rent. Sorrento doesn't have a sandy beach, but we really enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the boats.
Eat
La Scogliera: our first stop on the beach! We had good seafood pasta here and really good lemon spritzers. My favorite dish was the bruschetta. It was so fresh and tasty! The presentation was picture perfect and so was the backdrop!
Don Pedro Sorrento: I wouldn't say this place is a must, but we had a fun experience. We made reservations in advance, and when we showed up, there was only one other couple at the restaurant. They left, and we had the entire patio to ourselves. The waiter talked us into mussels with seafood. It needs to be noted that all seafood comes with full eyeballs and antennas in Europe. Ha! Once you get past that, it is good! After this experience though, we opted out of seafood, especially mussels. The serving size was huge!
Just Made: we randomly bought iced tea while we were shopping, and it was the best I have ever had! I still think about it daily. The next day, we weaved our way through all of the shops looking for it. Luckily, we found it! We asked for the largest size she had. There was only one size. Sad. I wanted the entire pitcher! I have no idea what made it so good. It was sweet but not like Texas sweet tea. The pitcher had lemons in it. I'm determined to find a recipe to make it.
Stay
II Gioiellino [Airbnb]: if you go to Sorrento, you must stay here! The owner, Roberta, is lovely. She left us breakfast and her place was so nice. It felt brand new and was very clean.
Transportation
Train [Naples to Sorrento]: I was expecting a nice train because it's a special tourist train. Expect the opposite! Very dirty. The train leaves from Napoli Porta Nolana/Garibaldi, which just means it's downstairs at Napoli Centrale. Easy to locate.
Foot: we walked everywhere in Sorrento. Luggage and all!
Train [Sorrento to Pompeii / Pompeii to Sorrento]: we bought train tickets in a coffee shop. Euros are recommended.
