OKC Memorial 1/2 Marathon 2018
The day before the run, we shopped, lounged by the pool and went to Festival of the Arts in Downtown OKC. As always, we ate only the finest foods: Jimmy's Egg for breakfast and hot dogs for dinner.
We also visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, and I'm so glad we did. As I was running, I kept thinking about the victims, survivors and rescuers.
Some runners wear bibs on their back that say, "I'm running for ________.". Multiple times, I saw "mom" written in the blank. As my mom cheered us on from the sidelines, I just couldn't imagine their pain. Firefighters from around the nation run in full gear. The entire experience is motivating and emotional.
When the bombing took place on April 19, 1995, I was 4. The bombing was 109 miles from our home. I don't remember it, but when my mom found out about the attack, she immediately came to pick me up from preschool. We have friends that were first responders.
No matter where I get to run, the OKC Memorial Marathon will always be my favorite race.
"The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is not about running, it is about life, honoring the memory of life lost through tragedy, celebrating the gift of life given equally to each person, and reaching forward into the future to life yet to be lived."
