Getaway: Key Largo
Sam qualified for President's Club again so we headed to Key Largo, Florida. When I travel anywhere with Sam, he makes all of the arrangements. I like being surprised so I never look at where we're going or ask many questions. All I knew is that we were staying at a place called Ocean Reef Club.
We flew into Miami and a private driver took us to the resort. We had to show our IDs to get into the property then the driver dropped us off at check-in so we could get the key to our condo and a golf cart.
We were confused at first. The pool and beach were walking distance so we didn't understand the purpose of the golf cart. Then when we got to the pool, there were children all around and the beach didn't have turquoise waves rolling onto the shore.
Shortly after we arrived, we completely fell in love with Ocean Reef. We quickly learned it's a private club, and the members are some of the most elite folks we will ever meet. The resort is centered on golf but also has a marina, private airport, tennis courts and a spa. Everyone has a golf cart, and that's how you get to the fishing village to eat and shop. We also used it to give ourselves a self-guided tour of the beach-front houses (aka mansions) and yachts. Condos at Ocean Reef sell for $5 million, and a boat slip is $2 million. To fill up some of the boats with gas costs $30,000.
I had a work event the day we were supposed to get home so Sam arranged for us to arrive and depart a day early. Arriving early definitely had its perks. We got there on a Saturday so Sam spent Sunday at the beach bar watching the Masters. He made friends with some of the members, while I laid on the beach as far from the bar as possible. I was still fully aware of what was happening with the tournament though because I could hear Sam cheering. Ha!
Sam played golf one morning, and I was supposed to get a massage, but I got too sunburnt our first day there. I blame the Masters! I worked out instead then walked to Reef's Treats to get a salmon bagel and coffee. I sat on the patio and watched the boats and people. I could happily do that every morning for the rest of my life.
There are two big differences in this trip and our last P Club Trip: the food was phenomenal and Sam didn't get sea sick! We made reservations for dinner each night. We had everything from pasta to oysters to quesadillas to steak and much more. Our favorite spot was Gianni's. Their bread came with olive oil, parmesan and garlic. On Sam's fishing trip, they caught mahi-mahi. They brought the fresh fish to the restaurant, and we had it for lunch. So yummy!
Ocean Reef was by far one of the best and definitely most exclusive trips that I have ever been on!
