COVID-19: Shelter in Place

by - April 23, 2020

Coronavirus pandemic, social distancing, stay at home orders, quarantine, underlying health conditions, essential businesses… these are just a few of the buzz words right now.

This post is a little different than others. The first few paragraphs state the obvious right now. But when I read this a decade from now or my future children read this, I want all of it documented.
In early March, MetroTex’s first step, like many companies, was to cancel all in-person events, classes and meetings until April 30th. That policy was in place for about two weeks when the World Health Organization started referring to the situation as the “Coronavirus Pandemic”. By St. Patrick’s Day, all three levels of government began implementing shelter-in-place orders. Businesses deemed “non-essential” were ordered to shut down, and employees were encouraged to work from home. The order was originally in place for two weeks. We’re about a month in at this point and have at least two weeks left.

At first, I thought people (including my fiancé) were overreacting. I literally laughed out loud when I got to the lake and realized Sam bought nonperishable groceries, like boxed pasta that we never eat. He’s laughing now because in our first weeks, we ate all of that and then some. Grocery stores and places like pharmacies and home improvement stores are essential businesses so they are open. We have ordered groceries online and picked them up. Per usual, Amazon comes to our house about every other day.

We have tried to stay home and stay away from people as much as possible. There are currently orders in place that require Dallas County residents to wear cloth masks if they are out in public. We’re spending most of our time at the lake, which is Henderson County, but we’ve still made and worn masks and gloves the few times we’ve been out.

I have personally LOVED this time at home, which is so not like me! We are very blessed that our income has not been affected and that our families are healthy. I was worried about getting bored and antsy, but we have kept ourselves occupied with house projects.

We had a busy spring planned. Our trip to Kansas City for Easter and beach weekend in Florida were canceled. Two (possibly three) of my wedding showers and another trip are postponed. Normally, this would upset me so, so much. I’m not sure if it’s because we’re keeping busy around the house, or I’m just enjoying this rare, quiet time at home with Sam.

PS one thing that did upset me was that the pics in my last post didn’t upload. It’s fixed!

I am trying to soak in every second of this shelter-in-place time before the craziness of life and daily grind at the office start back up. In the meantime, here’s what we’ve been up to!

Living Life Virtually: video conferencing is everyone's new way to work and play. The lake house has not had Wi-Fi until this week! This is HUGE! High speed internet was never an option here, but a new company is going house to house to install it. The timing is mere coincidence with the WFH orders. Since we've been at the lake, we work offline, and when we need to send an email or jump on a conference call, we turn on our hot spots. For the times that we’ve needed extended Wi-Fi coverage, we drive around the corner to Rick and Sue’s, sit in their driveway and “borrow” their internet. Everyone asks if they know we’re out there… yes, we have permission to go there whenever we need to!

The orders to pause life has provided us the unique opportunity to connect more with friends and family. We have a standing Zoom call with Sam’s family every Tuesday night, and the extended Dodge family had a video meet-and-greet on Easter. My fam also had a call with the whole gang – Mimi and Papa included! We’ve played trivia with Sam’s high school friends twice. So fun! We’ve watched church, including Easter service, every week. On Fridays, I speak to our new members at work. Since it’s a presentation, I’ve become quite good at setting up my news-reporter-like, in-home studio. For a time in college, I really wanted to be a local news anchor so this setup makes me feel like I’m fulfilling one of my old dreams. Ha!

Social Distancing: we had an unwelcomed visitor. Luckily, he kept his 6 foot distance but just barely! Sam walked into the mudroom, asked me what the weird smell was then figured it out… SNAKE! According to the neighbors, snakes have a distinct odor. When Sam first saw the slimy critter, he couldn’t really put it into words. He just panicked and grabbed me. We used an oar to get it outside. He hissed his entire way out the door. Long story short… RIP snake.

Same but Different: early on, they required restaurants to shut their doors but allowed for takeout, including alcohol. I’m telling you… I’m really enjoying this odd time in history! We picked up dinner, including infamous Little Larry margaritas, at our favorite Dallas spot, Hopdoddy. Not surprising either, we’ve ordered Domino’s Pizza.

And of course, we’ve had El Jacalito, which actually supports local! The meal isn’t the same without Randy Southpaw’s overwhelmingly loud music, but it works for now. They have a drive thru window on the side of the building. Who knew?! Their margaritas come in “sealed” containers, better known as milk bottles.

We discovered Drizly, which lets you order alcohol to your house. Per our dinner orders, we’re clearly margarita connoisseurs so we had a bottle of tequila delivered. I give Drizly 5 stars! It was super convenient.

Boating + Fishing: Sam almost always has a pole or four in the water. When he's not on the bass boat, he's got his setup off the dock equipped with cowbells on each pole so that he knows if he gets a bite. On one of the fishing excursions, he somehow got his lure through the steps of a stranger's dock and caught a fish, which required him to get off the boat and "fish" the fish out with his hands. He had enough success one night for a fish fry.

On the warm and sunny days, even in the middle of the week, the lake looks like summertime. Boats and Sea-Doos are everywhere. Kids are even in the water swimming and tubing! It's crazy.

Nicest Neighbors: it's truly like going back in time living at the lake, and I just can't get enough! We've had fresh baked bread left on our front porch, and Sue grabbed us chicken from the grocery store when we ran out. Mike and Debbie from next door are always giving us goodies, like this pretty flower arrangement. We don't know our Dallas neighbors like we do the lake folks, but they get a shout out too because they moved a package from our front porch to the backyard so that it was hidden while we were camped out at the lake.

House Projects: I've been through what seems like a thousand Magic Erasers and Swiffer pads. Sam has power washed every inch of concrete and stained every piece of wood he owns. He's also disassembled and cleaned the HVAC and vent system (with some assistance from the Squatty Potty!). And per usual, he's done preventative boat maintenance and a ton of other projects that I don't understand. One boat project required getting in the water, and he needed help. Obviously I wore waders because 65° water is not my thing.

Notable Mentions: besides the buzz words at the top, a few other things are trending. First up, Tiger King! What everyone is watching and talking about. Secondly, Sam's mustache. As much as I don't want to talk about it, everyone else is. It's for a fundraiser at work. After getting off a Zoom call with colleagues, co-workers not on the call texted him saying they heard about it. It's also a topic of conversation on all the family and friend video chats. I've honestly gotten used to it, but this post reminded me how much it's progressed over the last month. Fingers crossed it's gone soon!
